I had to leave the country for a day for my visa, and Abi tagged along with me to go to Cambodia. We got a drink at this cafe, and I started getting hungry. They were selling jackfruit and I decided to buy some. The container came with about 15 big pieces or bulbs of jackfruit. I started eating and offered Abi some, but she didn’t want any because she said that she didn’t like it when she had tried it 4 years prior. I ate half of it and asked her again because I really did not want to eat all of it. Sometimes when you eat too much of a certain fruit it turns out to work like a laxative…and I was not sure if jackfruit is one of those kinds of fruits and I was about to hop on a plane. I also wasn’t sure if I could take the fruit through security and I was not going to throw it away. Anyways, I offered her some once more in hopes she had changed her mind, but again she said no. So I continued to eat some more.
Finally I got down to just three pieces. I looked up at Abi and said, “are you sure I can’t convince you to eat just 3 pieces? It is super good!” Abi looked at me and said, “Three pieces? I don’t even want one!” I shrugged but asked again, “What about just one? Please?” She sighed and then finally agreed to try one. At this point, I was quite tired of eating just jackfruit, and it was 6 in the morning so my stomach had been on empty, and now my stomach was grumbling. Abi grabbed the piece, took a bite and looked up at me and said, “Wow! This is actually really good!” I sat there extremely surprised and shocked! If I would have just forced her to eat the fruit sooner I wouldn’t have had to eat 12 large pieces of jackfruit! She ended up eating the last 3 pieces and even said that she wished she would’ve tried it sooner because she really wanted more! I had no words. All I could do was just laugh.
In Psalms 34:8 David says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” A lot of times we miss out on the goodness of God because we don’t recognize it. And even when we finally, we look back and wish we would’ve experienced Him sooner. Maybe at first we may not see God’s goodness or His love but as we continue to get to know Him we grow to love Him.
This morning I read from Psalms 145:9 which says, “The Lord is good to ALL, and His tender mercies are over all His works.” Listen to the song Great Is Thy Faithfulness and really think about the words. God is so so good to us, even when we don’t deserve it. Truly He is our sweetest Friend and biggest Help and that isn’t something we should miss out on.
